June 2018 Editor's Message
by Seth Paronick
June brings start of hurricane season, but also Father's Day
|
As of June 1, it's officially hurricane season again. I wish you a safe summer in the sun. When there are tropical weather systems on the horizon, however, a good way to track their progress, without hype and fear-mongering, is via the National Hurricane Center's website at nhc.noaa.gov.
In addition to editing this newsletter for South Florida Free Beaches (SFFB), I also serve as President of Beach Education Advocates for Culture, Health, Environment & Safety (B.E.A.C.H.E.S.) Foundation Institute. B.E.A.C.H.E.S. is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit, educational and charitable adjunct to SFFB. I'd like to remind you that B.E.A.C.H.E.S. is now registered as an eligible recipient of donations from Amazon through its AmazonSmile program.
Also in June is Father's Day, Sunday, June 17. If you shop for the dads in your life on Amazon, consider doing so via AmazonSmile (same products, prices, and service as regular Amazon) via B.E.A.C.H.E.S.' special link at smile.amazon.com/ch/65-0963638. Amazon then donates ½% of your eligible purchase amount to B.E.A.C.H.E.S. at no cost to you! Whenever you shop on Amazon, please access it via the above link to help B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Thank you!
B.E.A.C.H.E.S. is also registered with Evite Donations™ through its charity partner, Pledgeling. Whenever you create an invitation on Evite, please consider adding "Beach Education Advocates For Culture Health Environment Safety" as the beneficiary of a voluntary donation from your guests, and mention in the Evite message to them why you are doing so. See how it works.
B.E.A.C.H.E.S. will soon also be registered as an eligible charity with PayPal and Facebook. Of course, you're welcome to donate to B.E.A.C.H.E.S. directly. Since B.E.A.C.H.E.S. is a 501(c)(3) organization, donations to it are eligible for deduction on U.S. income tax returns to the extent allowed by law. (Consult your tax adviser.)
The President's Message column by Richard Mason, SFFB President, is expected to resume in this space in the July 2018 issue of this newsletter. On his behalf, I am including below his usual message about joining and/or donating to South Florida Free Beaches.
Meanwhile, if you are not a current member of South Florida Free Beaches, please consider becoming one — numbers matter. At $35 per year for your household, it costs just 67¢ per week. A key benefit is the continued, clothing-optional use of Haulover Beach. How much is that worth to you? Join or renew at sffb.com.
SFFB also has a separate Legal Defense & Political Action Fund that supports its government affairs efforts and assists individuals cited for nude sunbathing. Even if you're not ready to (re)join just yet, please consider donating to this fund (not tax-deductible) to help with current challenges. Donations by bank check should be mailed to the address below (in e-mail version of newsletter). Thanks!
Haulover Beach news
Based on professional reviews in several of more than 85 leading travel publications that it tracks, TripExpert has selected Haulover Beach Park as one of the recipients of its 2018 Experts' Choice and Best of Miami awards, ranking it among the world's most distinguished attractions.
Kudos to Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, especially, the staff of Haulover Service Area, South Florida Free Beaches, B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation Institute, Beach Ambassadors (see related article below), Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Ocean Rescue (lifeguards) and Police, Boucher Brothers
and Haulover patrons, all of whose contributions have made these honors possible.
South Florida Free Beaches had the pleasure of connecting with Naturaleza y Nudismo Guadalajara (NNG), a naturist club in the Mexican state of Jalisco, when its founder and several members visited Haulover Beach in April 2018. The club got its start in September 2016. NNG published a video (at left, 4:24) of its visit to Haulover Beach. The brief narration is in Spanish, but anyone can understand the positive vibes that its members felt.

Beach Ambassador training
Do you spend a lot of time on Miami's nude beach? If so, you have a chance to give back by volunteering as a Beach Ambassador (BA) to help maintain naturist standards on Haulover Beach and keep it safely nude for all to enjoy. Sign up for and attend a training to become part of a wonderful corps of volunteers.
BAs serve as beach monitors and greeters, a combination of block watch and welcome wagon. For their service, BAs at Haulover Beach get a cool hat, ID badge, and free parking on their duty days. Seasonal residents are welcome to participate.
The next Beach Ambassador training is scheduled for Haulover Beach in Miami on Saturday, September 15. If you have any questions or wish to sign up for a training session, contact Ken.

Treasure Coast Naturists (TCN), the group that mentors Blind Creek Beach in Fort Pierce, FL, plans an after-beach pool party on Saturday, June 16 in Jupiter, FL for TCN members. New members may join at the party with their application filled out and $20 dues. Get details and RSVP instructions.
Reminder: TCN's 4th Annual Blind Creek Beach Skinny-Dip takes place on Sunday afternoon, July 15 in conjunction with the annual Nude Recreation Week.
Last month, St. Lucie County was working on expanding the Blind Creek Beach Southside parking area by clearing tangled foliage (for improved visibility and security), leveling the surface, and laying more gravel. TCN also brought in three new portable toilets, which it expects to be serviced more frequently and reliably than the old ones. The port-a-potties are not provided by the County; TCN pays for them with private donations, which are always welcome. "Like" TCN's Facebook page at facebook.com/TreasureCoast Naturists to be kept informed regularly.
Also last month, Thrillist, the online magazine of food and drink, travel, and entertainment, published an article titled, The Best Nude Beaches in Florida (for Naked and Topless Tanning). Of course, Haulover and Blind Creek Beaches are prominently featured, along with several others.

The Board of Directors of South Florida Free Beaches usually meets on the second Saturday of every month at 2:00 p.m. under the North Chickee (thatch-roofed shade structure) near lifeguard tower 15 on Haulover Beach unless another date and time or location is announced.
