Dear Naturist Friend:

President's Message

Haulover Park’s Proposed North Lot Boat Storage House and what you can to do to prevent it!

We’ve been meeting with the “Powers That Be” in the Miami-Dade County Park Dept. keeping tabs on the progress of the proposed construction of the 508 unit boat storage building planned for  the North Parking lot.

We’ve expressed our opposition to the proposed location, wanting it built further south where it was originally located on the Master Plan of 2001. That area would avoid mangrove destruction and the loss of parking spaces in the already inadequate North Lot, the one closest to the naturist beach.

They claim this location will have less of a traffic impact than building it further south. In fact, a boat storage house of this size and the planned additional boat launching ramps will bring more traffic to the North Lot area, already the most congested parking lot at Haulover Park.

As you may know, we don’t oppose a boat storage house in Haulover Park, although we can point out better locations on the mainland.  South Florida needs additional boat storage facilities and the county is looking for ways to generate revenue. We understand that. But why in the North Lot?  If you want to see the impact of boat trailer traffic, just observe the chaos in the afternoon at the present boat storage location.

If this boat house gets built in the North Beach Parking Lot there will be fewer parking spaces and you’ll end up having to park further south in Parking Lot 1. They plan to include adding extra spaces to the North Lot. However, those spaces will be taken up by the boaters and their friends, not the naturist beach users.

The county's need for more revenue should not be the basis for this boat house  location. That is exactly why Article 7 and the Citizen's Bill of Rights was placed in the Charter of Miami-Dade County. This allows for public meetings before allowing the exploitation of our rare county park land.

Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation Department, in compliance with the County Charter, is holding a public meeting on this topic to inform interested parties about their plans and answer questions. They are required to do so by Article 7 and the Citizens’ Bill of Rights. This is your chance to speak up to oppose this poorly planned development and preserve our parking spaces.

The
1.5 million tourists and locals visiting Haulover's naturist beach which generates an economic impact of $900M annually. M ost drive to Haulover Beach and deserve prime parking nearest their beach. The county park department has determined that an empty boat stored in a boat house on prime ocean front property has priority over the hotel staying, restaurant eating, resort and sales tax paying visitor and the naturists of South Florida.

We need a big crowd to turn out to get the mayor and the County Commission’s attention. Crowds count in a Democracy. SFFB reps will be there, you can be sure. Hope to see you there, although it might be hard to spot each other with our clothes on!
Speak now or you’ll forfeit the right to complain if you end up hiking 1/2 mile with your beach gear to get to the naturist beach.

When: Monday, August 20th 2012 - Time: 6:00PM to 8:00 PM.

Where: The Pelican Community Center
(behind Sunny Isles Beach City Hall - 1 Blk W of Collins Ave at 181 Street.)

MOTHER NATURE RULES NATIONAL NUDE WEEKEND

Planning an outdoor event in summer is a risky business. You can put a lot of work into planning and executing a picnic, reunion, birthday party or an attempt to break a world record. However, the weather is the boss.

The National Nude Weekend forecast for Miami was a 50/50 chance of scattered thunderstorms. For locals, this means any plans for a beach day would be cancelled. However, since SFFB had already put a lot of effort into the celebration, we took our chances and forged ahead.  As expected, many of the locals didn’t, so the turnout was less than a “normal” beach weekend. But we didn’t get rained out. Yay!

Although we fell hundreds short of breaking a record, the weekend was successful. It didn’t rain on the beach (thank you Mother Nature), we made some money for campaign contributions (thank you new sponsors) and collected hundreds of email addresses, swelling our ranks of friends and volunteers, which was our main goal.

Update on California Free Beach Ban

California's Parks Department has closed San Onofre State Park Beach to nude use, and reneged on its decades-old "Cahill Policy" of tolerance, threatening the future end of nude use at all California State Parks. However, there's a new chapter opened up. See NAC's Alert on the situation:

CRITICAL TITS PARADE AT BURNING MAN

The Burning Man art festival is a unique international community that live by their "Ten Principles" for a week out in the Black Rock Desert (federal land). Living for a week among these most creative people is a treat. I can be comfortably naked throughout the city wherever I want, and no one bats an eye.

The attitude toward top free equality for women at Black Rock City is summed up by this Burner during the Critical Tit's Parade.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-QQ3YR3AU4 Of course the guys get their pride ride too at the Critical Dicks Parade. How nice to be able to celebrate what most of the world hides in shame.

When 60,000 people can, as a group, adopt an attitude of gender equality, and body acceptance, I'm encouraged that there's hope for us yet.

The Man burns on Saturday, September 1st. I'm gonna be there!

Burn Naked! Norma
