E-NEWSLETTER August 2008
Dear Michael

Our August enewsletter is a little early...largely because of the NAC Action Request for all naturists to write to the CA Park Department Director.  (see below)

What is naturism?  The articles in this issue bring that question to the fore.  Is it just the sybaritic freedom to be naked,  or are there deeper issues of our common humanity and our connection to the natural world?  The International Naturist Federation advocates a naturism that promotes "self-respect, respect for others, and for the environment."  Can we live up to that ideal?

With concerns over escalating oil costs, global warming, and rampant environmental degradation, perhaps it's about time...

'The Naturist Society welcomes the greening of naturism. Or maybe we should say, "the re-greening of naturism," for naturism has its roots in a green worldview. Naturism is about much more than clothing-optional recreation. It's a natural way of living. And recognizing our interdependency with Nature, we as naturists can affirm the goodness of being and appearing fully human while acknowledging our need to tread wisely and kindly on the Earth. To this end TNS wishes to cultivate a heightened respect for Nature. Of late we are seeing fellow members contribute articles to N, workshops at gatherings and festivals, and ideas for special events...all addressing ways of living humanly rich and ecologically-friendly lives.'

Look for the Fall 2008 issue of N Magazine (which for some time has been printed on recycled paper), a special eco-themed edition.

Visit the Ecotique at the TNS Skinny-Dipper shop for new environmentally sensitive products.  The new Green Naturally organic cotton tee shirt printed with water-based inks features the discrete new TNS eco-logo seen above. (Made in the USA, too.)  Paper or plastic?  How about the stylish TNS Leave a Green Footprint reusable organic cotton tote bag instead?

Mark your calendars for The Naturist Society Southern Naturist Gathering, which will be held this year at 200-acre Lake Como Family Nudist Resort north of Tampa from October 16 thru 19, 2008.

Lake Como's motto is "The Place to Be."  Como is a resident-owned cooperative with a non-discriminatory admission policy.  Of the resort's 200 acres, 60 are wetlands and another 51 are woodlands of cypress and pine.  Five lakes are contained within or border the property.

Meet naturists from across the USA; share your thoughts at workshops & discussion groups on various topics; enjoy the saline pool, hot tub, and tennis, volleyball, horseshoe & petanque courts; live concerts by Angelina & Armand and by Fairie Elaine; sailing lessons on 35-acre Big Moss Lake.  Bring your drums and rattles for the fire drum circles each night!

Tent space is virtually unlimited, but it's recommended you book in advance to secure on-site motel rooms (there are 20) or RV hookups.

Caliente says goodbye to AANR

Caliente Resort in Land O' Lakes in mid-July returned its American Association for Nude Recreation charter and severed its ties with the organization.  The action came after AANR sent a letter to all its member resorts reminding them of its family-friendly policies for resorts.  In May AANR had temporarily suspended Caliente's charter, pending inquiries into Caliente's hosting of Aahz theme parties (promoted as providing "an explosive sexual atmosphere" on the Aahz website) and its marketing to Swinger groups, including promoting the resort at Swingfest.  Ironically, this action comes just after AANR had published a tribute to recently-deceased Caliente co-founder Chuck Foster in its Bulletin tabloid.  TNS had earlier removed Caliente from its Naturist Network.

Angye Fox of Caliente was quoted in the Tampa Tribune of July 15, 2008:  "Theme parties are fun and sexy parties.  They wear masks and elegant clothing.  It's hot and attractive, and there's no pressure for anybody to have sexual relations.  What they do in the privacy of their own room or home is up to them."  The same article noted an "Eyes Wide Shut" Caliente theme party, referring to the 1999 Stanley Kubrick movie about a private sexually-oriented club.  At the same time, the resort notes that its policies still forbid public displays of affection in its common areas.

Currently on its website Caliente is promoting a "Foxy Moxy Cabaret Risqué" event, including "strip tease" (!) and a "freaky showcase" of "burlesque and cabaret."

We don't wish to comment on or condemn swingers.  But while we've been told by one Caliente member that Caliente security does enforce its ban on public sexual displays, many still question whether the marketing to swingers is appropriate at a resort that initially marketed itself to potential residents and members within the nudist community, and indeed even a betrayal of trust to those nudists from whom Caliente received some of its initial start-up capital through pre-construction residence sales to permit it to exist today as a profitable business entity.

That's a question of honor and conscience that at this point is probably best left for resolution between Caliente ownership and its 1800 members, hundreds of whom have purchased properties at a facility many now consider trending non-nudist, and some others of whom have purchased $14,000 lifetime resort memberships in the expectation of the resort maintaining a family nudist atmosphere.
