The President’s Message
RichardPix.jpg

 By: Richard Mason

The effort of our organization is to try to make sure the naturist beach has the basic amenities it needs for beach visitors to enjoy a positive beach experience.

Additional Bike Racks: We have been requesting additional bike racks for several months. Recently, we saw a new rack was installed on the central section of the beach. We have been told that there are two additional bike racks on order.

New Beach Shower: We have been requesting a new beach shower on the south end of the naturist beach since when we knew about the North Beach Parking Lot and tunnel closing last year. Last month we met with the environmental officer for the State of Florida and Shirley Mason of BEACHES Foundation for site selection in the dunes and product requirements for dune installations.

The next step is to get the park department to free the money and move forward on the installation.

Parking Lot No. 1: We receive two specific types of complaints about this lot.

  • Why is the lot closed when I can see over 50 empty spaces?
  • Ans.  The reason is the park management lacks personnel and has a policy not to open the gate until there are 85 empty spaces.

If you are not happy with this policy you should do the following: Send an email to Carlos Gimenez, Mayor of Miami-Dade County at: mayor@miamidade.gov Tell him that you are sick and tired of being forced to park another ¼ mile further south away from the naturist beach location and to increase the budget for Haulover Beach Park so they can hire the help needed to keep the parking lot gate open.

  • Why is the parking lot flooded and why do they not pump out the water?
  • Ans. The storm drains and piping are clogged and have not been cleaned out. They claim the pipes to the bay will not drain.

If you are not happy with the neglect by the park department because they will not bring in water pumps to drain the parking lot where you now pay $7.00 to park, you should do the following: Write an email to Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Mayor of Miami-Dade County at: mayor@miamidade.gov  Tell him that you are sick and tired of having to park in ankle-deep water because they won’t drain the flooded parking lot.

The parking lot flooded before we moved to this lot. The park department management had a few years to correct the problem and did nothing even though they knew we would be moving to the lot two to three years ago. I would say that is disrespectful to the beach visitor.

If you are there during the week or do not have a computer, you can call the Mayor's Office and lodge a complaint. Phone 305 375 5071. Monday to Friday 9AM to 4PM. Be polite but firm.

Citizenship 101.

Factoid No. 1: Government functions on complaints. No complaints, no function.

Factoid No. 2: Haulover’s parking lots bring in over $1.5 million dollars annually just from the visitors to the naturist beach. That money goes downtown to a general fund where it is used at the discretion of the park directors. Since they receive more money from the parking lot than they budget to maintain it, we can only assume they are they cheating us out of our rightful maintenance needs.

Factoid No. 3: About 5 years ago, after listening to park management complain that they had no money to meet the basic needs of the naturist beach, which we did not believe because of the parking lot revenue, we made them an offer that they could not refuse. We asked them to add $1 extra to the parking fee for the naturist beach users. The $1 would go into a set-aside account and would be available for special needs.

There are about 200,000 automobiles annually that pay that extra dollar. That equates to about $200,000 a year for the past 5 years. Yet when we ask for things like pumps, they ignore us and we have yet to see where those extra dollars have been spent in the naturist beach area.

Fellow naturist beach users, you have every right to complain about the inattention to basic needs at the naturist beach. Since the park directors have not responded to our basic needs, write or call the Mayor. He is the Executive Mayor of Miami-Dade County.

The citizens of Miami-Dade County voted in the Executive Mayor’s position because they were unhappy with the lack of response to issues by the managers and directors of county departments.

The present mayor ran for that office because he wanted to be the executive to fix things.

Give him that opportunity to fix things.

Thanks for your interest and support.

Richard

Own a Piece of Nude Beach History!

Seven actual signs from Haulover Beach, Florida's premier nudist beach

By Steve W. and Seth P.

Two signs read: ATTENTION - BEYOND THIS POINT YOU MAY ENCOUNTER NUDE BATHERS. Five others read: ATTENTION - BEYOND THIS POINT SWIM SUITS OR CLOTHING REQUIRED.

B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation Institute is auctioning these signs, which were actually posted at the Haulover Nude Beach in Miami, FL until January 2014. Haulover Beach has consistently been rated one of the ten best nude beaches in the world because of its beautiful, white sand, easy access, lifeguards on duty, and regular monitoring by volunteers to keep it clean and friendly.

These metal signs are 12" wide by 18" high (30 cm by 46 cm). The text is in either blue or green on a white background. The back of each sign is blank. All of the weathering, rust, scratches, and patina are in as-is condition, exactly as the signs were when they were removed from their original posts. These signs had been in constant use at Haulover Beach for up to 15+ years when they were decommissioned in January 2014 by the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department and were replaced in service with a new design and color scheme.

These authentic and collectible signs are extremely rare. Each bid is for one (1) sign, which comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by B.E.A.C.H.E.S., South Florida Free Beaches
(SFFB), and the Miami-Dade County Parks Department. Minimum bid is $100 for the "Nude Bathers" signs and $50 for the "Swim Suits or Clothing" signs. Shipping is an additional cost to the winning bidder.

The accompanying photos (with Haulover Park and Beach in the background) are just a sample of the variety of wording and text color. Some signs may vary slightly from these photos in wear and tear. Photos of each individual sign will be posted on eBay when the auction goes live. Auction opens in the near future. To view additional photos and check for auction dates and links, go to: www.beachesfoundation.org/signs

Update on Clay County anti-nudity legislation action alert

Clay County Commission.jpg
On October 10, the Naturist Action Committee
(NAC) issued a grassroots action alert to Florida residents, and SFFB forwarded the information to our e-mail list. It concerned a package of legislation to regulate “adult” and “sexually-oriented” businesses, including an anti-nudity ordinance, that was to have its first reading on October 14 before the Board of Commissioners for Clay County, FL (immediately southwest of Jacksonville). Naturists were asked to send e-mails immediately to the Commissioners to express opposition, and a number of naturists responded. After four hours of discussion at the Commission meeting, the ordinances remained scheduled for a second reading at the subsequent Commission meeting on October 28. In response to the misgivings expressed in another large turnout of the public, they were then tabled for up to six months for further study and community input.

At the October 14 meeting, more than three dozen speakers from the public, including leaders of SFFB and other naturist organizations, American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) and AANR Florida, expressed opposition; none spoke in favor. Some local residents asked for the second reading to be postponed and the proposals referred to a public workshop for discussion and refinement. A motion to that effect failed for lack of a second.

To monitor the status of this legislation and for information about possible further grassroots action, stay tuned to www.naturistaction.org/clay.

Richard and Shirley’s meeting with Visit Florida President

Richard Mason, SFFB President, and Shirley Mason, B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Executive Director, met on October 13 in Tallahassee, Florida’s capital, with Bill Seccombe, President and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA
, the state’s official tourism marketing corporation. They were accompanied by Ralph Collinson, AANR Florida President, and Ramon Maury, the government affairs representative employed there by both SFFB and AANR Florida. They discussed, and delivered a package of information about, nude recreation and its economic impact on Florida, especially Miami. VISIT FLORIDA offered to run an article on the topic, and arrangements were made to follow up on that. This is an important, early step in statewide recognition of the naturist vacation market.
