Dear Naturist Friend:

BONDING IN THE BUFF - A New Partnership

Haulover Beach, as on virtually all established naturist beaches, has a population of gay sunworshipers.  They love having the luxury of a nude beach in South Florida, as do we all.

In an effort to reach this population, we have established a working partnership between South Florida Free Beaches and Gay Naturists International (GNI), the world’s foremost association of male naturists. Our goal is to engage more gay Haulover fans in supporting our efforts to keep our beach clothing-optional through political action and mentoring of the beach through our relationship with Parks Administration.

We’ve been exploring this possibility for the last year, culminating with an invitation to attend their Annual Board meeting in January where we were well received.  GNI’s Club Liaison, Seth Paronick, attended our SFFB Annual Board Retreat in January, giving everyone an opportunity to ask questions.

Combined SFFB & GNI Board of Directors and Shirley Mason, B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation

There are three GNI-affiliated men's naturist clubs that have made regular use of Haulover Beach for organized events:

The WildFyre Society (www.WildFyreSociety.org) and Gold Coast Bare Skins (www.goldcoastbareskins.org), both based in Ft. Lauderdale, and Tamiami Area Nudists ( www.tamiamiareanudist.com), based in the Ft. Myers/Naples area.

To get a better sense of the breadth and depth of the organ-ized men's naturist community both in Florida and elsewhere, explore the "Naked Communities" section of GNI's web site at www.gaynaturists.org, especially Nude Clubs and Naked Yoga. Use the right-side navigation column or this shortcut:

http://gaynaturists.org/communities

GNI is having a membership special during February only. Their $40 annual membership is reduced to $10 for current members renewing or extending their membership. New or expired members may (re)join for $20. What better time to support GNI? We hope our gay SFFB friends will take advantage of this opportunity to add another dimension to their naturist lifestyle. Membership is open to all men aged 21 or over, regardless of orientation. JOIN GNI .

GNI’s flagship event, The Gathering (officially known as The Annual International Gathering of Male Naturists), is the largest organized nude rendezvous on land in the world. It’s being held in the Pocono Mountains of eastern Pennsylvania, August 16-25, 2013. Registration pens in April.

Thanks so much to the Board of GNI for shaking the extended hand of SFFB. We trust that our joint effort to mentor Haulover Beach and educate the public about naturism will prove successful.

BEACH AMBASSADOR TRAINING (& pizza party)
MARCH 24th

Meet us Haulover by Lifeguard Tower 15 at 10:00. We’ll set up the Information Booth and spend some time educating you about SFFB, how to field questions, collect donations (involves begging) and sign up new members (involves twisting arms).

You’ll also get the chance to do the "BA Stroll" with experienced BAs to get some one-on-one training on talking to people on the beach. We'll get some legal training from one of our trusty Haulover lifeguards too.

BAs are required to attend two of the four training sessions a year in order to retain your Ambassador status, so I hope you’ll be able to get the first one under your belt (I mean hat). The only other requirement we ask of our volunteers is to spend a minimum of 8 hours of BA beach time a month. BA's enjoy free parking at Haulover Park and designated North Lot parking spaces.

SFFB will be supplying pizza for lunch, so PLEASE RSVP to our Chief Ambassador Ken at ken_tauer@yahoo.com.

Congrats to our newest Ambassadors Sindee, Walt and Armando.Chief BA Ken on the left and Shirley Mason do the honors.
Photo credit, or should I say blame, belongs to Norma Mitchell. (Did I mention I could use a photographer at the beach?)

All are welcome to attend these training sessions. Interested in becoming a Beach Ambassador? We can get the ball rolling right there. If approved, your training for this day will be counted toward your yearly commitment.

HURRICANE SANDY LEFT HER MARK

Although we missed the brunt of the super-storm in Miami, Sandy impacted our beach by displacing about three feet of sand off the shoreline, in effect shortening the pylons of the Lifeguard Towers.

There are no plans on either raising the towers or digging them out. The Lifeguards say it doesn’t affect their ability to watch for swimmers in trouble or potential hazards in the water.

SFFB WORKING HAND-IN HAND WITH THE COPS

An incident of lewd behavior (a flasher) was reported to us by a resident of a Sunny Isles Beach Condo. This happened at the north end of the pedestrian path which parallels Haulover Beach. We urged them to report it to the police, which they did. Here’s a letter from Sergeant Buchanan regarding beach security and a very nice compliment not only to us, but to you too:

"The Intracoastal District has been conducting high visibility vehicle and bicycle patrols at Haulover Park since Monday, November 26, 2012, when we were forwarded the e-mail complaint.  Additionally, officers assigned to our undercover squad were informed of the activity as well.  In addition to the increased police patrols it is extremely important for members of the public to call the police when they see suspicious persons. Even if these persons have not broken the law but merely look suspicious.  The non-emergency number is (305) 4-POLICE or 911.

We work with South Florida Free Beaches and their members have been very good at educating the public about clothing optional beach etiquette and calling the police when they see criminal activity or suspicious persons.  Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information.

Thank you,

Tom Buchanan, Sergeant
Miami-Dade Police Department

Intracoastal District, NRU, Bikes/COPS"

Moral of the story: It takes us all to keep the beach safe. Do your part by being a sponsor of South Florida Free Beaches and receive a FREE DVD. Our Legal Defense Fund could use some help too!
