DECEMBER 4^TH HEARING ON THE BOAT STORAGE FACILITY

Bottom Line: Get those "Leather Cadillacs" resoled!

A group of 13 SFFB sponsors and supporters went to the County Commissioners’ meeting to speak in favor of a 60 day postponement of the vote on the Revised General Plan for Haulover Park. The reason we requested this was to investigate the legality of this project and submit suggestions that would not impact the North Parking Lot. 

Jack Kardys, Director, Miami-Dade County Parks Depart-ment opened the dialog by offering to show a 10 minute presentation on the Plan. The Commissioners declined to watch it. It’s like they didn’t care. So Mr. Kardys verbally ran through the major points of the revision requested. They opened up the floor to the public and we all had two minutes to say whatever we wanted.  

Our speakers mentioned the key points of objections that were expressed at the August 20^th meeting called by Commissioner Heyman, the sponsor of the Plan. We were listened to, although it seems we weren’t really heard. The Board of Commissioners questioned Mr. Kardys, and the attorney for Westrec, the developer, who spoke about contractual deadlines that had to be fulfilled – meaning that the approval had to be forthcoming from the County soon.

One very important point that was made by the Parks Department is that the entire construction will be paid for by Westrec Construction and they are throwing in the parking lot reconstruction. A sweet deal for the County. They feel that the new General Plan will enhance the whole park and have practically swore to God (or whatever) that the number of parking spaces they have allocated will be plenty for everybody. Time will tell. The final vote approved the plan. So that’s that.

What’s to be done now? To amend an approved General Plan is rare. We don’t intend to move in that direction. About all we can do is try to stay apprised of the progression of the project and will pass that info on to you. Mr. Kardys reiterated that the southern extension of the naturist beach is on the plan. We’ll see if they can come up with some money to create the dunes to provide the screening necessary before we begin using this area. This area will be nearer North Parking Lot 1, where the beach overflow parks now. 

We’ll do our best to stay in the loop with the County Parks Department, the staff of  Haulover Park and the developer. Keep in mind that for the last few years we haven’t been in the loop. We’ll also do our best to improve communication.

The problem was that this agenda item was not suppose to be heard until next year. We found out last Sunday night a week ago that this item was agended.  We did not have time to execute our plan of action.

We also lacked available volunteers that to help with the tasks that quickly multiply  when there is a move that affects Haulover Beach.  If you want to help and to be put on a call list call Richard at 305 283 3633.

We are disappointed in the outcome of our efforts, but who knows . . . maybe this a blessing in disguise and we just don’t realize it.

SFFB/FNA is comprised of people who believe in the philosophy and freedom exercised at Haulover Beach. The lucky ones serve on the Board of Directors, a few are Beach Ambassadors and many are members and sponsors.

Many of you show your support when we put out a call for volunteers to either show up at an event, or write an email to politicians, attend a public meetings, donate $ to our Legal Defense Fund, or become annual sponsors. You’re there when we need you.

So I hope you’ll be able to join us next Sunday at Haulover. We’re having a Pizza Party in appreciation of our members, sponsors, supporters, volunteers, Beach Ambassadors and friends. 

At 2:00 we’ll be raffling off a 3 day/2 night stay at Sunsport Gardens, as well as other very valuable prizes. Volunteers, Beach Ambassadors, Naturist Society members and SFFB sponsors will receive a free ticket. For others it’ll be two dollars in the donation jar. B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation is donating the drinks.

We need you to R.S.V.P through our Meet-Up group if you plan to attend so we have enough drinks and pizza for everybody. Serious volleyball will be played at Lake Como  next March at the 12^th Annual Superbowl South Nude Volleyball Tournament. Ten days of play from novice to AA class – 3, 4, & 6 player teams on 2 sand and 7 grass courts. B and novice class teams are required to be coed with at least 1 woman. Ladies-only teams will compete on March 8.
