Dear Naturist Friend: President's Message National Nude Weekend will be on July 14th & 15th this year. Plans are in progress for our celebration of the annual weekend which is also the 21st Anniversary of the founding of the naturist beach. Norma & Perry are heading up the committee for the special events and could use volunteers. Please contact norma_sffb@earthlink.net
The Handicap parking issue is hot again and Shirley and Ken are attending meetings and there appears to be some movement. The Paralyzed Veterans of America have taken an interest since the park is out of compliance with the ADA law. See separate article below.
Miami-Dade County is in the middle of another political campaign. The Mayor’s office and seven county commission seats are being contested. There are five reform candidates running for commission seats in an attempt to oust five long serving commissioners. Two commissioners had no opposition as of this writing. At the Florida legislature level all 40 senate seats are open. The house campaigns are in full swing. South Florida Free Beaches is being solicited for campaign funds from both old friends as well as new candidates. Traditionally we donate to and support those candidates that have supported us in the past and to new candidates that will support our interests.
Traditionally we have been able to do this from contributions to our Legal Defense/Political Action Fund. You can support our efforts by sending a donation to SFFB/FNA, PO Box 530306, Miami Shores, FL 33153. In “for” section of your check write: Political Action Fund. You can donate online by going to our web site www.sffb.com Thanks for your continue support. The Boat Storage House is still planned for the North Beach parking Lot and the issue is still ongoing. We will be issuing a separate email alert on the issue. In the meantime you can write to the following individuals to express your opposition to the location. In your letter request that it be built at its original site as per the Haulover Master Plan which was at the location of the existing boat rack and that they conform to Article 7 of the Miami-Dade County Charter.

Paralyzed Veterans Association of Florida (PVAF): Advocacy director Tim Werner had written to Governor Scott asking for his support of SB 226, otherwise known as the "Placard Bill". It was signed into law on April 27th. This bill authorizes trained volunteer parking enforcement specialists to confiscate disabled parking permits, requires those who renew their permits to apply in person and present written proof of their disability, and requires an annual review of death records to ensure the permit holder is still alive. The bill restricts applications for renewal of a permit by those found guilty of fraudulent or other unlawful use of a permit. It establishes a means by which persons can report abuse of disabled parking permits by telephone hotline or by mail. Some provisions take effect this July, and some begin in October. Some of the details of enactment are still being written by responsible departments. Haulover Handicapped Access The PVAF has received information from the Parks Department that 6 new accessible parking spaces will be added to the current 9 spaces near the lifeguard headquarters, for a total of 15 spaces there. This is scheduled for completion by the end of 2012. Accessibility ramps for tunnels: The existing two northernmost tunnels are currently being evaluated for design preference, risk factors, estimate of probable costs, and project schedule. The results will be finalized by next month. If these results are as presumed, construction of one tunnel will proceed now and eventually all tunnels will be converted for compliance.· Should this evaluation prove physically unfeasible due to the age of the tunnels, the proximity to A1A, or other factors, or beyond our allocated budget, the department will assess the construction of a 10-12 accessible space parking lot in this area east of Collins Avenue. Information on future Social Club events at: http://www.meetup.com/Clothing-Optional-Social-Club/. The Las Vegas Nudist Expo June 1st & 2nd was organized by nudistclubhouse.com, a social networking site for nudists, and was heralded in the "nudist press" as "a new era of nudism" and "the nudist event of the [21st] century". Well, maybe. (We'll engage in our own bit of braggadocio and claim the establishment of Haulover's naturist beach as the "nudist event of the 20th century.") As Dr. Johnson said, the thing about a dog walking on its hind legs is not whether is does it well, but that it can do it at all. And it's not easy to bring together even 22 vendors, including a dozen of the larger nudist resorts and several of the most prominent nude travel concerns, for such an exhibition, and enough interested people to do a buy-out to "nudify" a small hotel for the event (a minimum of 60, in this case). The clothing-required exhibition itself was at the Alexis Park Hotel. Though one may note, The Naturist Society already brings together each year several hundreds to do a "buy-out" of a non-nudist resort for its annual Eastern Gathering. But those people are already naturists. The open question is how many newcomers the Expo enticed to try nude recreation for the first time. That's a difficult question to answer at this point, without more details on attendence...although certainly there was a fair amount of publicity on the event in the "mainstream" media. AANR reported signing up an undisclosed number of new members. Many traditional naturists complained that the entire Expo was adult-only. That was perhaps necessary for the pool parties featuring alcohol, perhaps less understandable for the exhibition itself. One prominent naturist activist told us she and her husband decided not to attend when they found they couldn't bring their young son into the Expo hall. Yes, many nude cruises and a few nudist resorts are adult-only options, but shouldn't a Nudist Expo be more inclusive? ...especially as Nudist Clubhouse boasts its association with AANR, an association promoting "social family nude recreation"? So, a measured congratulations to Nudist Clubhouse on its first Nudist Expo. Since there's talk of making this an annual event, it was apparently financially successful for the organizer. If so, one assumes the participants and interest will grow with time. With enough practice, maybe one day the dog will even learn to dance. Online coverage of Nudist Expo on FOX.
