Dear Naturist Friend,

Thanks to all who signed our petition against budget cuts to Miami-Dade Ocean Safety (Lifeguards).  SFFB is continuing to collect signatures at the beach, and we also have the online petition available, for our seasonal snowbird visitors and others that can't make it to the beach soon.

If you have not signed yet, please consider signing the Online Petition.

BEACH AMBASSADOR TRAINING

Our next training session is scheduled for Sunday October 16, 2011.  If you are interesting in joining the program, check out more info online or contact us by email .

SFFB considers this program an important outreach and liaison between naturist beach users, the police, the Parks Dept, and the community.

BEACH SAND RENOURISHMENT

Richard Mason reports that Brian Flynn of the Miami-Dade Environmental Protection Department has told him that sand and funding are scarce this year, and priority for new sand will be given to Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles Beach.  The sand at Haulover has been deemed adequate.  However, it is known that sand from Sunny Isles often eventually finds its way onto Haulover due to winds and currents.

BOAT RAMP & STORAGE

Another item Richard is following is a suggestion to build boat launch ramps in the back of the north parking lot and to erect a storage facility for 600 boats. He's asked Kevin Ascher of Parks Dept. planning and Bryan Flynn of Miami-Dade Environmental Resource Management if there are any plan drawings available for this proposal, which might impact parking adjacent to the naturist beach.

SAN ONOFRE BATTLE CONTINUES

If you haven't been following the story, after 30 years of tolerance under the "Cahill Policy", the California State Parks Department has been citing naturist users on Trail 6 at San Onofre State Park, a traditional clothing-optional area.  The good news is that contested citations have all been dismissed so far by the courts.

The California State Parks Department has the power to designate clothing-optional areas, and the Naturist Action Committee is now pushing for this as a resolution.  The original "Cahill Policy" (named after then Director of CA State Parks Dept.) eschewed the designation option but allowed for nude use unless there were complaints from others present.

It no doubt took naturist users by surprise when in 2008 the policy was suddenly rescinded and new "Nudity Prohibited" signs were installed at Trail 6 at San Onofre.  Some more bad news, as reported by NAC, is that skinny-dippers have been cited, or asked to dress, at two other CA state parks with traditional nude-use areas.

Meanwhile, in San Francisco...

Public nudity is not illegal in San Francisco, where nude strollers may routinely be encountered, especially in the Castro district.  SF Supervisor Scott Wiener has proposed a new ordinance....not to stop the nudity, but to make it an offence to sit on public seating without a covering.  Sounds like a reasonable compromise to us to enact the same rule prevalent at nudist resorts!

Nude Year 2012 Festival

a "heads-up"
preview

B.E.A.C.H.E.S. is planning another overnight  Nude Year Festival at Haulover Beach.  Due to protracted negotiations with the Parks Dept. it is unable to present details or take reservations at this time.  An announcement will be sent if and when an arrangement is made.

New website features Google Earth links

This relatively new (started Jan. 2010) website intends to be an online guide to clothing-optional beaches and retreats (the term the authors prefer to "resorts")  worldwide. Still under construction, sections on North America, the Caribbean and Europe are virtually complete.

The information provided appears to be of good quality, and includes info on the orientation of facilities, such as family v. adult, and tolerance of sexual orientation.  You can also pull up a customized Google map for each facility using the small red icon links for each listing.

Naming a c/o beach as such in North America is tricky.  The authors of this website have used a 1 to 4 numerical rating system.  In Florida, Haulover & Apollo are rated 1 ("freely nude"), while Playalinda is rated 2 ("traditionally nude"), and MacArthur Beach State Park is rated 4 ("potentially risky").
