The fine for having glass containers at the beach is $110. We have been advised that the Parks Department will actively ticket violators. You may think you are exempt, and that you carefully handle your glass bottles, albeit in direct violation of the ordinance. However, you may not have seen injuries occurred when beach visitors stepped on glass shards, with the resultant dripping blood and risk of infection. Would you like to step on a jagged piece of glass as you're leaving the beach? Glass and bare feet do not mix! Glass containers deposited in the waste baskets often fall out during mechanized collection and are later crushed into hazardous shards. Please keep glass off the beach! On June 20th, more than 400 participated in a charity skinny-dip at Rhossili Beach in Wales. one county commissioner. They were recalled by a 88% vote.
In May, Miami-Dade County held an election for a new mayor and two county
commissioners. South Florida Free Beaches interviewed several of the candidates, consulted
with our Tallahassee lobbyist Ray Maury, and employed a local lobbyist for consultation
on which candidates to support.
We met with and supported two candidates for two different county
commissioner seats. We made the maximum legal donation of $500 each to their campaigns.
They both won. One of them has been appointed to the Park Committee of the
county commission. Both new county commissioners support the concept of a
designated naturist beach.
The mayor's race ended up in a run-off between two candidates. Both
candidates support the designated beach. One candidate is believed to be more
pro-active in supporting the causes brought to him as a mayor in a local
city. SFFB/FNA is supporting that candidate. We have met with this candidate and
have donated $500 to his campaign.
SFFB/FNA is getting more active at the county level due to the lack of
progress in achieving improvements to Haulover Beach Park, as promised by the
Miami-Dade County Park Department.
During the election for state offices held last November, SFFB/FNA made
several substantial donations to candidates for the Florida Legislature as well
as Governor and State Attorney.
President SFFB/FNA Chair, Gov't Affairs Committee Comments may be directed to: info@sffb.com National Nude Weekend - a History The concept of a national nude beach day originated in the 1970s with Naturist Society founder Lee Baxandahl and others, who were working to preserve traditional nude-use areas in the Northeast and in California. Truro Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, 1976 Beachfront USA, California, 1976 Among those working to preserve nude use at Truro Beach on Cape Cod was Tom Chittenden, later to move to South Florida and found South Florida Free Beaches. Tom Chittenden (left) with Lee Baxandahl at Virginia Key, 1982 The 80s were not a good decade for naturists, as we lost a lot of traditional nude-use areas in Florida, such as Honeymoon Island in the Tampa Bay area, and Virginia Key in South Florida. Honeymoon Island, near Tampa, c. 1982. Virginia Key, 1982 Tom Chittenden, Virginia Key, 1983 Subsequently, the nude beach day expanded to National Nude Weekend and Nude Recreation Month (July), as the concept was adopted by naturist organizations such as the American Sunbathing Association (ASA), now known as the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) Lee Baxandahl and family, mid '80s, publicity photo for National Nude Weekend The foundation of the naturist beach at Haulover was preceded by public relations efforts by SFFB, and by meetings with Dade County officials. Surfside, 1988 SFFB founded the naturist section of Haulover Beach on July 14, 1991. Haulover Beach, 1991 Haulover Beach, 1992 SFFB lobbied for lifeguards and parking at Haulover's clothing-optional area, and finally won approval to install permanent signs marking the naturist area in 1993. Haulover Beach, December 1993 foreground: Richard Mason background: Shirley Mason, Clyde Lott, [unknown], Bruce Frendahl 2011 finds Haulover's naturist beach extremely popular, yet still subject to the whims of legislators and administrators. There is still no public acknowledgement of the existence of Haulover's naturist beach on the website of the Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department.
