Dear Naturist Friend,

in this issue:
  • ADA compliance at Haulover Beach
  • Music festivals at Cypress Cove and Lake Como
  • FYN Naked Spring Bash
  • Nudist Bill of Rights
Note:  We regret that tickets for the Florida Preheat mentioned in our last enewsletter sold out quickly at the beginning of March upon reaching the 600 participant cap.  No tickets are available.

The regular Florida legislative session was opened on March 7th.  We are reviewing issues of concern to naturists and beach users, including the Governor's not budgeting funds for beach renourishment.  We plan on issuing a separate report in April.

ADA COMPLIANCE AT HAULOVER BEACH

B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation has been addressing access for persons with disabilities at Haulover Park with the county for a very long time. At issue is the long-promised provision of additional handicapped parking spaces east of A1A at the north end of the clothing-optional beach, and also the removal by the Parks Dept. of the wheelchairs that B.E.A.C.H.E.S. obtained for Haulover Beach in 2005.

B.E.A.C.H.E.S. now plans to raise funds to purchase Mobi-Chairs and Mobi-Mats to enhance beach accessibility for persons with disabilities.

James Delleur, a licensed civil and traffic/transportation engineer, and Ken Tauer, a wheelchair-bound engineer, have been working pro bono on ADA compliance projects, especially the additional new parking lot east of A1A, for B.E.A.C.H.E.S and on behalf of the disabled users of Haulover Beach.

Shirley Mason, Executive Director, addressed a ADA issue summary letter to the Miami-Dade County Commission on Disability Issues (CODI), and received a notice of support from Ernie Martinez, CODI Chair, on March 22nd.

President's Message

Richard Mason

Naturists:
Second Class Citizens?

Recently, a gay actor by the name of Jonathan D. Lovitz was called for jury duty in New York.

When asked if he could serve as an impartial juror, he answered as follows:  "I cannot serve as an impartial juror because as a gay male unable to legally marry a same-sex partner I am a second class citizen.”

The judge said, “Well, I asked for candor.” He was dismissed from jury duty.

This simple truth has become a national story and has become another way for a minority to get their story out.  Whether or not you support the issue of gay marriage, you have to consider the question.

Lovitz stated in a MSNBC interview that "I never set out to be an activist of any kind.  But, there is really no bad place to talk about equality."

Maybe naturists that feel they are not being given a rightful choice in recreational facilities when they are denied a designated beach area could use this path to bring attention to the naturist cause.  Are we being relegated to 'second class' citizenship when denied a share of recreational funds for a naturist facility?

Maybe if we bring the issue to the public square for debate, we may have more success than keeping quiet.

I know the next time I am called for jury duty, I am going to use the 'second class' citizen issue to get attention. Not because I want to get out of jury duty, but I want to get the publicity for the naturist cause.

Personally, I believe every citizen should serve when called to jury duty. But you have to compliment Lovitz for his creative statement to bring attention to an issue for a mindful discussion.
