South Florida Free Beaches SunDial Enewsletter:  Feb. 2011

Dear Naturist Friend,

 What's the problem with nudity?

That might be a theme of this newsletter.

  • Is the designation of a clothing-optional area in Delray Beach, FL contrary to the "family values" of the community?
  • Why did ordinary women choose to be photographed nude, and tell their stories, as part of The Century Project photo exhibition?
  • Were old nudist films a good introduction to nudism, or just exploitation?
  • Why visit a nude beach?  AANR's new website allows you to post comments on your favorite beach.

However, we first have to announce the passing of someone who was a Haulover Beach supporter and visitor over many years...

In Memoriam

Our friend Randee Beth Fried passed away suddenly on January 16, 2011 at her home in Miami.  She was 47.  Randee was an original SFFB board member from its founding in 1980.

A Reminiscence will be held at Haulover Beach Sunday February 6th at 2 PM near lifeguard tower #15.  All Randee's friends are invited.

Suffering for many years from early-onset osteoporosis, Randee would often casually mention what bone she'd broken that month.  The count of broken bones was above 30.   She may not have been dealt the best hand in life, but she seldom complained.  She had a photographic memory, and could memorize your phone number instantly.

Randee's passions were the beach, music and books.  Jackson Browne was her favorite musical performer.  An avid reader with an impressive library, among her favorites were sci-fi authors Robert A. Heinlein and Frank Herbert.  As a Heinlein character once remarked in one of his novels, you can't trust a civilization where you don't see nude people on the beach.  Randee agreed.

Her enthusiastic work, motivated by her love for people, for the beach and SFFB's mission will be missed by many.  Her smiling face and willingness to help both friends and strangers in any way she could made a real difference to visitors to the beach.

Delray Beach, FL

Local resident David Armstrong has been suggesting the designation of a clothing-optional beach area for several years.

A point/counterpoint between Armstrong and Delray vice-mayor Adam Frankel was recently telecast:

Book Review

Bodies and Souls: The Century Project

What makes this nude photo compilation unique is its focus on the "ordinary" women who posed, revealing both body and soul.  Not merely a photo album, it includes the commentary of the women explaining why they participated.  It is a distillation of The Century Project photo exhibition that has been displayed in numerous cities across North America to excellent reviews.

Documenting a 25-year project of photographer Frank Cordelle, Bodies and Souls includes 98 nude photos from the exhibition in color and black-and-white of women ranging from infant to 94 years old.

More info on the
Century Project website

The book is available at fine booksellers and online at
The Naturist Society
Skinny-dipper Store

Book & exhibition reviews:

"The book is a culmination of The Century Project, a photo exhibit that has traveled across the United States and Canada.  Notes from the women appear next to their pictures, the words revealing struggles with body image, abuse, disease, or other wounds healed or still open.  Along with these pictures, these autobiographical captions also reveal the strength, joy, and power of the women who have participated."

--Suzanne Lingren, Utne Reader

“Don’t cover your eyes. The women who appear in Bodies and Souls: The Century Project (Heureka Productions) want you to see them—really see them—in all their naked humanity.”

--“The Naked Truth.” O, The Oprah Magazine, March 2007

"Each photo, whether a shy seven-year-old who is photographed just as she breaks into laughter, or a bookish and grandmotherly woman sitting quietly in her library with a faint smile on her face, has a story to tell. Most of the photographs are accompanied by a personal statement by the woman herself about why she is posing, and these statements are what give the exhibition its kick. Some of the stories are heartwarming; some are heartbreaking. More than one woman viewing the exhibition has been moved to tears by the photographs and stories of the courageous women who have posed in front of Cordelle’s lens."

--Renee Stephen, Independent Voice  [review of the exhibition]

Nudist Flicks

Diary of a Nudist
is one of a series of low-budget nudist films producer/director Doris Wishman did in the 50s and early 60s.

The plot:  Anti-nudist editor sends reluctant "girl reporter" undercover to nudist camp to do expose.  Reporter becomes nudist and is fired by editor when she refuses to do hack piece on nudism.  Frustrated editor visits camp and becomes nudist; publishes pro-nudist article; proposes marriage to reporter.  All apparently live happily nude ever after.

While films such as this generally presented a pro-nudist message, they are often considered "exploitation films" targetted at an audience less interested in nudism than in seeing (mostly) young women displaying their nude bodies (with a few strategically-placed hats, towels & shrubs).

Like most of the genre, the film is tedious, with many repeated shots, like 3 carloads of women arriving sequentially at the nudist camp gate.  A clip of a woman doing underwater cartwheels in the pool is repeated at least 3 times.  Still, it might amuse you ocassionally.  The entire film has been posted on You Tube.  (75 minutes, with commercial interruptions.)

We're reminded that portions of the 1954 film Garden of Eden were included in the National Geographic Channel Taboo series a few years ago, featuring Florida's Lake Como Resort in a segment on nudism.  While the Garden of Eden storyline follows the typical "doubter becomes nudist by experience" formula, it's generally considered one of the better presentations of nudism from the era.  The Taboo documentary as a whole is similarly fair and balanced.
