South Florida Free Beaches Enewsletter:  New Year 2011

Dear Naturist Friend,

We hope all our subscribers are enjoying a pleasant holiday season and we look forward to seeing you at Haulover Beach in the new year.

We'd like to suggest a few naturist New Year resolutions:

  • Introduce a family member or friend to naturism.  A great way to do this is to pick up a copy of our Guidebook to the Naturist Beach, or send them a link to our website at www.sffb.com.   Or get a copy of our new Haulover Beach DVD.  Most of us know people who thought naturism weird, until they tried it for themselves!
  • If you aren't already an SFFB sponsor, please consider joining to help us in our mission to preserve Haulover's clothing-optional status and protect nude recreation...or make a contribution to our Legal Defense/Political Action Fund.  Info at www.sffb.com/sponsors.
  • Consider joining The Naturist Society.  You get a great full-color quarterly magazine, plus the membership card good for discounts at Naturist Network nudist resorts.
  • Join both SFFB & TNS, and get The World's Best Nude Beaches and Resorts as our thank-you for your support.
  • Consider joining us at the 2011 Mid-Winter Naturist Festival in February.  The schedule and registration form are now posted online.
  • If you own a South Florida or naturist business, consider an advertisement to help us defray the cost of the newsletter.  We'd like to welcome our latest advertiser, Skin + Body Waxing.

Further info on all these suggestions follows below.

Beach Ambassador
Holiday Greeting!

This photo was sent by one of our former Ambassadors, who moved to North Carolina a few years ago.

They had snow for Christmas.

We'd like to remind visitors that Miami's average December temperatures are 77 daytime high and 62 nighttime low, so we're not quite this cold!

FLORIDA LEGISLATIVE SESSION 2011

The new Florida Legislature has been sworn in and members are currently organizing and preparing bills and other legislative actions for the 2011 legislative session, running 60 days during March and April.

This legislative session will be a risky one for naturist beach visitors. The main reason is because there are so many newly elected  first year  legislators.  Fully a third of legislators are new this session:  in the Senate, 13 new members out of 40; in the House, 44 new representatives out of 120.

History has taught us that it is the first year legislators, trying to make a mark for themselves, that are the first ones contacted by interest groups,  and the most likely to sign on as a co-sponsor of anti-nudity bills.
The bills are usually presented as "family values",  "child protection" or crime prevention bills, and are thus a "low-risk" legislative alternative to dealing with more serious issues, such as revenue shortfalls, budget reductions, and tax increases.

However, the bills often have broad provisions that absolutely exclude nudity on public lands, or in front of children, without consideration of intent or potential harm.  Presented on the floor of the House or Senate with such a cache, passage is virtually assured - Who wants to be seen to oppose "family values"?
Any such state statute could close Miami-Dade County's naturist beach at Haulover to nude use.  Government actions in the past few years in California, specifically involving Black's Beach, have highlighted how fragile naturist use of beaches can be, even after decades of innocuous use.

SFFB's legislative mission is therefore twofold:  1) Educating new legislators on naturism and the lack of harm from a clothing-optional beach, and 2) defeating such bills in committee, before they pass to the floor, or amending them to address legitimate concerns without prohibiting clothing-optional recreation absolutely.

South Florida Free Beaches/Florida Naturist Association maintains a paid professional lobbyist in the state capital, Tallahassee, to catch bills at an early stage. We also prepare government affairs packets that are delivered to legislators at county delegation meetings and in Tallahassee by volunteer lobbyists.

Future reports in this enewsletter  will keep you informed of any legislative threats.  You can support our Florida Legislative efforts by donating to our Political Action & Legal Defense Fund. You can donate online or by mail at www.sffb.com/sponsors.

Thanks,

MEET THE SFFB BOARD

Ken Tauer

Ken has been on the Board of Directors for a couple of years and has become more and more active, particularly as Chair of our Beach Ambassador Program.  He recently became SFFB's new secretary.

Hailing from Minnesota originally, he holds degrees in engineering and economics.  He's a Vietnam Vet and is active as an elder in his church.  He's been working with the Haulover Park management to help them make the beach more handicapped accessible by being ADA compliant.  He's also a political activist and not afraid to speak his mind on any topic.

If you see him at Haulover, make sure you stop to say hello and thank him for his time and effort on behalf of keeping the beach clothing-optional.

If you're interested in our Beach Ambassador program, drop Ken an email at ken_tauer@yahoo.com.

Jock Sturges:
Line of Beauty & Grace

For decades, Jock Sturges' nude photos have been of those comfortable in their own skin, of members of the summer naturist beach community of Montalivet, France, and of "counter-culture" communities in Northern California.  As one of his collaborators remarked (The terms "subject" and "model" seem out of place when discussing Sturges), "We are not naked for the pictures, we're naked for the summer, and because we're alive."    Sturges has been known to set up his 65-pound 8 x 10" format view camera in the morning,  and wait all day for a photo that captures the beauty and grace of a special moment.

A naturist himself, Sturges provides thought-provoking comments on naturism and on the attitudes toward the human body among different cultures in a 15-minute 2008 online video, comprising out-takes from an hour-long DVD on Sturges.

(Note there is a 2-minute introduction in German, with subtitles, but the interview is in English.)

More on Sturges may be read in a 2002 B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation interview, which is still available online:

A NATURIST NEW YEAR RESOLUTION

TNS managing director Nicky Hoffman Lee

How about this!  SFFB works hand-in-hand with our Naturist Society friends on many projects and are grateful to have a national organization willing to support our mission.   SFFB & TNS were both founded in 1980, and the late TNS founder Lee Baxandall was an important mentor to SFFB in establishing Haulover's naturist beach.

If you're not a member of TNS, please consider changing that.  In this digital age of information, how nice it is to sit down in a comfy space to read a quality publication like N Magazine.  No where else can you keep up to date with both the international and domestic world of naturism.

Join both SFFB & TNS and receive a free copy of The World's Best Nude Beaches & Resorts, a $25.95 value.  (Existing SFFB members may also receive the book as a premium by becoming a new Naturist Society member & extending their SFFB sponsorship for an additional year from current expiration date.)  Just go to sffb.com/sponsors for additional information.

In reflecting on the holiday season, friends like The Naturist Society are counted high on our list of blessings!
