South Florida Free BeachesEnewsletter:  November 22, 2010

Dear Naturist Friend,

We usually avoid enewsletters around the holidays, unless there's a pressing issue, so we would like to extend our best wishes for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwansaa, the Winter Solstice, the New Year, etc, as may be in each individual case appropriate.

We should note that the B.E.A.C.H.E.S. overnight Nude Year Event at Haulover will not take place this year, due to coordination issues with the Miami-Dade Parks Department.

Articles in this issue:
  • Florida Afterburn Afterword
  • Beach Ambassador training
  • Mid-Winter Naturist Festival
  • Playalinda Beach nudity signs removed
  • Haulover Beach DVD in stock; initial orders shipped Monday November 22nd.

Florida Afterburn Afterword

Florida Afterburn took place Nov. 10 thru 12 in Lakeland, Florida, including South Florida Free Beaches' Naked City theme camp, organized for the past few Florida Burn events by Norma Mitchell.

Burn events are rather like the Key West Fantasy Fest, but without the commercial elements and in a more primitive setting.  They are regional manifestations of the Burning Man Festival that takes place in Nevada each year around Labor Day in the Black Rock desert.

Norma's husband Doug took pictures this year of the Florida Afterburn, which you can see thru the link below.

Afterburn 2010 pictures

If you missed the fun, there are 2 Burn events each year in Florida (Spring & Fall); the next is the Preheat, April 22 thru 24, 2011, in Lakeland, FL.  For more information, go to the BURNT ORANGES website.

Beach Ambassador Training

Sgt. Tom Buchanan of the Miami-Dade Police led the training session on Haulover Beach, October 3, 2010 for SFFB's Haulover Beach citizen's watch patrol.

FESTIVAL INFORMATION

Playalinda Nudity Signs Removed

A complaint of naturists has been the 4 large signs installed at Playalinda a few years ago under the former superintendent, Carol Clark, warning that nudity was prohibited.  Two of the signs were near the park entrance, and two at the traditional clothing-optional access dune crossovers, #13 & #14.  No such signs were installed at the "textile" areas from dune crossovers #1 thru #12.  The signs at crossovers #13 & #14 were therefore particularly troubling, as they seemed a deliberate inducement to generate visitor complaints and conflicts.

Several months ago, naturists met with the new superintendent, Myrna Palfrey-Perez.  Ms. Palfrey-Perez promised that the signs at crossovers #13 & #14 would be removed.  Representing the naturists at the meeting were Bob Allen of Friends of Playalinda, Frank Cervasio of Central Florida Naturists, Richard Mason of SFFB, and Shirley Mason of B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation.

Recently, the signs at crossovers #13 & #14 have indeed been removed, as can be seen in the photo below:

The removal of the signs does not equate to official designation, but indicates a willingness of the new superintendent to be more tolerant of the traditional naturist use of this area of the beach.

Gunnison Beach, a National Seashore in New Jersey, has signs indicating the nude areas...like the one shown here.

Whether or not this first step at Playalinda will lead to a similar further recognition of the naturists' presence at Canaveral would at this point be perhaps an idle speculation.

As far as we know, there is no current intent to remove the other two signs, located at the Playalinda toll booth and on the road a few hundred yards before beach parking lot #1.  However, as this is a Brevard ordinance, citations are only issued by Brevard sheriff's deputies, and we are unaware of any such cititations being issued in the past few years.

Although isolated cases of harassment by individual park rangers were reported in 2009, SFFB members Michael Kush and Marianna Biondi visited the beach in July & October 2010, and had an opportunity to speak with Bob Allen and other regular beach users (like Ursula and "Fisherman Wayne"), who reported no current issues.

An important reminder:

Playalinda visitors are reminded that the traditional clothing-optional use area is north of Playalinda dune crossover #13, at the very end of the access road to the beach.  At the north end of Canaveral National Seashore - separated from the Playalinda area and accessed from the north by a different route - there is also the naturist area at the south end of the the north access road, south of the the last Apollo Beach dune crossover, #5.

Please restrict nude use to the traditional areas at Canaveral, and observe naturist beach etiquette.  These concerns are critical to the continued existence of the clothing-optional areas.

For further information, see pages 13 thru 15 online in our Spring 2008 Sundial   This includes a map of Canaveral National Seashore. (Please note the entrance fee is still $3 per person, as the proposed increase to $7 reported in the Sundial was never implemented.)
