Dare to Bare?

According to TripAdvisor, 49% of Americans would do so at a clothing-optional beach.  19% weren't sure, 32% said they wouldn't.

How does the U.S. compare to Canada, the UK, Europe and Australia?  Only 19% of Europeans said they definitely wouldn't get nude, the lowest "body-shy" index of all groups surveyed.

Haulover Beach Grab?

Sunny Isles Beach mayoral candidate Michael Schnitzer is proposing annexing Haulover Beach to the city with extensive development, including a "multiplex cultural museum" and a "sports arena".  Here is Mr. Schnitzer's
image of the future of Haulover Beach Park from his newsletter:

Oz looked like a great place to live...so did Shangri-La...but we're not sure how these cities were funded.

In fact, in 1997 Sunny Isles tried to get Haulover included within its boundaries when the city was incorporated, including drafting a commercial development plan for the park.  SFFB fought that attempt.

Lacking from the current and the earlier proposal is any consideration that Haulover is a county beach park - one of two in Dade - that is available to all citizens of the county.

But then some would probably like to see the naturists go, as well as the poorer families from the inner county communities, who can now relax for a day for a $5 parking fee, and picnic in the park for the cost of a few groceries and charcoal briquettes.

But how would these multi-million-dollar improvements be funded?  By now, citizens should be over the fantasy projections of political candidates that mean nothing else than underwriting commercial interests with taxpayer money, so taxpayers can buy $7 beers and $5 Cokes as they stroll the beach...with the permission of the new owners, the commercial developers.  The public commons?  An antiquated notion indeed!

Such plans would require a county-wide vote under Miami-Dade Charter Article 7, but in the past the county has hidden such land-use changes in bond issues, as it did with land near MetroZoo and Bicentennial Park.

In Miami-Dade County developers have a strong influence over the County Commission.  Look at the Marlins Baseball Stadium for an example.

SFFB is further advising Floridians to vote "YES" on Constitutional Amendment #4, which requires a public vote before land-use plans can be approved or changed.

The strategy of the developers will be to set up a Citizens Group that will have a theme of lowering homeowners' property taxes, by leasing or selling "surplus" county-owned land or parks that are troublesome.

We have noticed that someone in the county has taken an interest in Haulover Beach and now wants all inappropriate sexual activity recorded and written up.  We're all for keeping inappropriate behavior off the beach, but incident reports shouldn't be accorded the same weight as citations and arrests.

The county has added two policemen to patrol the beach. Also they have placed a ranger on the beach to focus on inappropriate behavior. The county has asked the Lifeguards to record inappropriate behavior on the beach.  Why? After 19.5 years. Why?

County Commissioner Sally Heyman has recently told our lobbyist Ray Maury that the naturist beach is more trouble to the county than it is worth...that is costing the county more money than it is taking in.  (This evaluation apparently doesn't include the economic value of naturist tourists to the local hospitality industry.)  And we thought that parks weren't commercial enterprises, but amenities for the benfit of citizens...who pay for them in taxes and fees!  After all, streets, sewers and fire departments maybe "cost more" than they "take in".

These are all signs. They may be just a coincidence and mean nothing, or they may be disconnected sources of information coming to us in a  fragmented form.

Schnitzer posts a newsletter on Facebook.  The Haulover proposal is on pages 3 and 4.  We've saved the PDF, or you can go to Facebook.
