Dear Naturist,

Articles in this issue:
  • Canaveral National Seashore
  • Sunsport Youth Camp at Haulover
  • Florida Afterburn

We've had a few questions on when the Haulover Beach video shot during National Nude Weekend and the Skinny-dip in July will be available.  Not yet, but we'll make an announcement when it is...probably in about a month.  It's still being editing and currently runs slightly less than 30 minutes.

Naturists meet with new Canaveral National Seashore Superintendent

Myrna Palfrey-Perez assumed her duties as new Superintendent of Canaveral National Seashore in August, replacing Carol Clark.  Ms. Palfrey-Perez's immediately prior assignment was at Biscayne National Park in South Florida, though she had previously served in a subordinate capacity at Canaveral, during the tenures of superintendents Simpson and Newkirk.

On August 17th, a meeting took place with Ms. Palfrey-Perez at the request of Bob Allen (Friends of Playalinda).  Also attending were Canaveral head ranger Eric Lugo, Frank Cervasio (Central Florida Naturists), Richard Mason (SFFB) and Shirley Mason (B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation).  Under discussion were Canaveral's traditional nude-use areas at Apollo and Playalinda Beach, in relation to similar naturist areas at other national parks (like Gunnison Beach in New Jersey) and Haulover Beach.

Naturists requested that the superintendent consider installing new signs recognizing the traditional nude-use areas.  Currently, though naturist use continues at Playalinda, signs there warn against nude use and state the Brevard ordinance.  The meeting was deemed cordial, and a follow-up meeting is planned at a future date.

background information:

Attitudes towards the naturists have changed with superintendents (and with local politics).  It should be noted that nudity is not prohibited on federal lands.  In the 90s, Superintendent Wendell Simpson was strongly opposed to nude use.  During Simpson's tenure, in 1995, Brevard County enacted a local anti-nudity ordinance that Simpson attempted to have enforced at Playalinda Beach by Brevard Sheriff's deputies.  (However, Canaveral's Apollo Beach lies in Volusia County, with no anti-nudity ordinance.)

Simpson's replacement, Robert Newkirk, was more concilatory, and signed an agreement with NAC and other naturist interests regarding traditional nude use at Apollo Beach.  Ms. Clark initially seemed to follow in Newkirk's conciliatory path, though lately, for whatever reason, relations with the naturists were less cordial.

Youth Camp at Haulover

Ea
ch year, Sunsport Gardens Family Naturist Resort hosts the TNS Summer Naturist Youth Camp at its facility in Loxahatchee, Florida for the children of naturist families.
A week of arts, crafts, learning and fun are carried out in its tropical setting.

This year, July 18th thru 25th, parents, mentors from Florida Young Naturists and volunteer camp counselors, spent the week educating the next generation of naturists on the joys and responsibilities of life.

The group visited Haulover Beach to enjoy a day at a sandy beach and a dip in the Atlantic Ocean.  The youth are given a lesson on the issues of a designated Free Beach and the different dynamics that go with it.

South Florida Free Beaches donated box lunches for the 18 children and B.E.A.C.H.E.S Foundation opened its beach concession with free ice cream for the children and the 20 adults in attendance.

Each year there are children that would like to attend the Naturist Youth Camp, but can’t because of family financial hardship. For those children, sponsorships are available.  Each year South Florida Free Beaches and B.E.A.C.H.E.S Foundation each sponsor a child.

If you are a nudist club member, maybe you can have your club or social group sponsor a child at next year's camp.

Readers who wish to sponsor a child at the next Naturist Youth Camp, can do that by contacting Sunsport Gardens Family Nudist Resort at: 800 551 7217.  Ask to speak to the Youth Camp Coordinator.

Maddox Ranch, Lakeland, FL

We might call this a camp-out counter-culture county fair....or maybe a temporary retro hippie commune?  What's it all about?

It's not a naturist event, though naturists are welcome.  Dress up in costume,or be nude....whatever!

You bring yourself, food, water and a tent.  There are no vendors.  Buying and selling are prohibited.  Most participants self-organize into a score of so of Theme Camps: gifting food, art, drink, performance art, music, or...whatever...to the community.  Come prepared: read the online "Survival Guide".

Tickets ("Invitations" in Burn parlance) increase in price from $37.50 to $70 as registration tiers are filled.  Reserve now for lowest cost.  Absolutely no tickets will be sold at the gate.  You must register in advance.  For the last event, the maximum 600 participant number was hit a few weeks in advance of the event.  Open ticket sales start August 1st.
