The B.E.A.C.H.E.S. event planned for Haulover May 1-3 has been cancelled.  The next event is scheduled in July to mark National Nude Recreation Week and the 18th anniversary of Haulover's naturist beach.  For updated info, monitor the BEACHES web site.

We're also working on the next SunDial, which should be published early in May.
Haulover featured in Euro travel magazine
TR
In its May, 2009 issue, this 64-page European online travel magazine features 4 articles on nude recreation, starting on page 23.  There is an article on Haulover Beach on page 26.

The magazine is available free in PDF format at the Tourism Review website  Here you may download the entire magazine, or scroll down the page to download individual articles.
A Naturist Beach in the Florida Keys?
On April 15, the Monroe County Commission voted 4 to 2 to ask County Attorney Suzanne Hutton to research the feasability of establishing clothing-optional beach areas on county property.

This follows the formation of the new Key West Free Beaches group that has attended public meetings and been lobbying Keys officials and tourism interests.  The group has now established a 6-member Board of Directors; advisers to the group are SFFB's first president, Tom Chittenden, now a Key West resident, and SFFB's current president Richard Mason.  SFFB has provided KWFB with 50 naturist information packets for distribution to local officials and tourism interests; these are the same packets SFFB distributes to FL state legislators.

Shirley Mason of B.E.A.C.H.E.S. has contacted the County Attorney's office and has forwarded Florida case law citations demonstrating that a clothing-optional beach does not conflict with Florida statutes.

Commissioner Heather Carruthers recently found $480,000 in unused Tourism Development Council funds that have been earmarked to improve Higgs Beach in Key West.  Commissioner Sylvia Murphy has suggested that a section of Higgs might be developed as a clothing-optional beach to make Key West more attractive to European visitors; Commissioner Mario di Gennaro concurred that it was time to consider this.

A meeting has been scheduled with Commissioner Carruthers and County Attorney Hutton on May 6th.  Participants will include Richard & Shirley Mason.

While this is preliminary, discussion so far has been reasonable and amicable.

A wry comment on propriety,
from President Theodore Roosevelt:  An Autobiography

"[We swam] Rock Creek or even the Potomac if it came in our way.  Of course, under such circumstances we had to arrange that our return to Washington should be when it was dark, so that our appearance might scandalize no one...

If we swam the Potomac, we usually took off our clothes.  I remember one such ocassion when the French Ambassador, Jusserand, who was a member of the Tennis Cabinet, was along, and, just as we were about to get into the swim, somebody said, 'Mr. Ambassador, Mr. Ambassador, you haven't taken off your gloves,' to which he promptly responded, 'I think I will leave them on; we might meet ladies!'"

(The "Tennis Cabinet" was an informal group of government officials, military men and foreign diplomats that accompanied the 26th President of the United States on his exercise excursions in and around Washington, DC.)

Playalinda Beach Update
An update on Playalinda Beach at Canaveral National Seashore:

Dear Fellow Naturist:

With vacation time approaching and the beautiful spring months here in Florida upon us, I've begun getting inquiries about what's new at Playalinda Beach.

While we haven't lost any ground in our battle with the anti-nudist administration of the Seashore, we haven't gained much, either.  For the visitor to the Titusville area there shouldn't be any serious problems.   The local rangers are still surly and hiding in the dunes hoping to see sex, but the sheriff no longer comes out to harass us.

The brightest news is that we have a new congressperson, Suzanne Kosmas, whose district covers both ends of the seashore, and who was pro-nudist during her time in the state legislature.  I've sent her information on the destruction of the dunes due to improper placement of sand fencing and the superintendent's attitude toward us, her biggest customer group, and asked for a meeting.  Still waiting for an answer, but I imagine as a new congress person during this economic downturn, she has more important fish to fry.  You might want to help me turn up the heat for our issue.  Visit her website and from there send an email telling her you're a naturist and vent your feelings and how you're treated as a second-class citizen by the rangers and much you spend locally each time you visit Playalinda.  Here's the link to her website:

http://www.kosmas.house.gov/

Those who live in her congressional district have an even greater obligation write.

If any one is planning a visit in May, be aware there's a Shuttle Launch scheduled for May 12, a Tuesday, which means that the beach will be closed the previous weekend, May 9, 10, 11th unless the launch is previously delayed. Any delay past the scheduled launch time will keep the beach closed until it's launched.  Watch this site for launch updates:
